Today, by 15:30, will be signing the Donation of Santiago Kastner's papers to the National Library of Portugal.
«Macario Santiago Kastner (1908-1992), musicologist, instrumentalist, teacher, lecturer, critic, was born in London where he began their musical studies. Later, studied harpsichord and piano in the Netherlands and Germany, and Musicology and construction of key instruments. From 1929 it was installed in Barcelona, continuing studies of Musicology with Higino Anglès and key instruments (piano, harpsichord and clavichord) with Joan Gilbert Camins. His interest in Old English Music brought him to Portugal in 1934, where he stayed until his death.
«Initially, its activity in Portugal was developed mainly as a concert and researcher, in 1947 was professor at the National Conservatory, where he directed the classes of clavichord, the Interpretation of Ancient Music, and also of the Harpsichord and History of Music until 1984. He worked with many musicians still active (instrument players and singers), who knew the awakening interest in the recovery and interpretation of ancient music. Its educational activity has spread to Spain, where he was collaborator of the Instituto Español de Musicología (Barcelona), also participated in panels of examination in Portuguese and foreign institutions.
«As a lecturer, presented all over Europe and teke part in the celebrations of the fourth centenary of the work of Francisco Salinas (1513-1590), in Salamanca. Received invitations to teach at universities in the U.S. and in South Africa. He was called to work in the most prestigious scientific publications and dissemination of musicology.
«As a concertist, he made recitals and recordings for radio and television in several European countries. But if his interest is focused on music for key, he also interested in the Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque repertoire for wind instruments, for which he founded and directed the Menestreis de Lisboa, which was presented in Portugal and abroad.
«Kastner has a large scientific production: critical editions of works for key by iberian authors, a study on Carlos Seixas, and later responsible for publishing the critical edition of his 80 Sonatas.
«The recognition for the work of Santiago Kastner in favor of Musicology and Music Ancient Iberian due recognition was still in life, receiving many honors and decorations. Also in the year of his death was published a book of tribute to work Macario Santiago Kastner (FCG, 1992).
«The papers now donated to the BNP for two of his closest students, Rui Vieira Nery (PhD) and Manuel Morais (PhD) consists of professional correspondence, journals, loose texts, with critical and chronic recortes of authorship of Santiago Kastner, personal documents, photos, and critical programs to concerts performed by him, covering his activities between 1931 and 1992.»
