Is running since January 22 until February 19 in the Foyer of the Open Foyer of Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, a cycle of concerts for voice and piano, entitled "Augusto Machado and his time" organized by Maestro João Paulo Santos. This cycle, which runs on Thursdays, provides a comprehensive overview of the work of Portuguese composer Augusto Machado (1845-1924) and other contemporary composers, portuguese - including Alfredo Keil (1850-1907), Óscar da Silva (1870 -- 1958), António Fragoso (1897-1918), Viana da Mota (1868-1948), Luís de Freitas Branco (1890-1955), João Guilherme Daddi (1814-1887) and Joaquim Casimiro (1808-1862) - and foreign -- including Hervé (pseudonym of Florimond Rong, 1825-1892), Jacques Offenbach (pseudonym of Jacob Eberst, 1819-1880) and Angelo Frondoni (1812-1891). With a varied and appealing program, this cycle allows a contact with Portuguese composers whose names may even be more or less known to a wide audience but whose music is little or not at all performed, not only for lack of interest from musicians but also because it is not published yet. The documentary collection of Augusto Machado is now complete at the National Library of Portugal, through the documentation generously donated by his great-granddaughter, Maria Constança (in the program below is a link to the sources available at the National Library). It also noted that the composer was a member of the Cenacle, literary tertulia in wich take part Jaime Batalha Reis, Eça de Queiroz, Solomon Saragga, Lobo de Moura, Manuel de Arriaga, Antero de Quental, Guerra Junqueiro and Jose Fontana. This tertulia originated the famous Democartic Conferences of the Casino, in 1871, which marked the formation of which would be known as "generation of 70". Machado inspired Eça in the creation of Cruges, the composer of "The Maias", described as "a devil balmy, conductor, pianist, with a tip of genius». «- Nobody does a thing, said Carlos lounge. You, for example, what are you doing?
Cruges, after a silence, shrinking the shoulders growl:
- If I make a good opera, who would perform it?
- And if Ega make a beautiful book, who would read it?
The teacher ended by saying:
- This is an impossible country... I think I'll have a coffee.» (QUEIRÓS, Eça de - Os Maias)
